Digital Photography 101: Lesson 1

We were supposed to post 2 - 3 of our photos of the sort that we like to take, including camera, exposure details, and focal length. As usual, the hardest part of this assignment was choosing photos!

Courthouse in Fulton County, Indiana

Shot with Nikon D70, Program "not defined," F-Stop f/8.0, exp time 10/2500.

I like the composition of the photo. I would crop it more squarely, losing a bit of those blown-out clouds.

I wish I knew how to make the clouds less bright whilst making the front of the building (left side) a little lighter. Thank goodness for Photoshop, but is it possible to do this in camera?

Stages of Life

This was shot with Nikon D70, Program again "not defined," f-stop f/5.6, exp time 10/1250.

This is in bad need of a cropping. I like the upper line crop, but I'd take in the sides, making it more square, and lose the bottom darkness.

The photo is quite soft, but i think i would be able to save it with some careful sharpening.

Fulton County Courthouse Sentinel

I like these limestone lions which surround the Fulton County courthouse.

For this photo, I used my Nikon D70, Exposure Program "not defined" (I'm starting to wonder what that means.), F-stop f/11.0, Exp time 10/5000.

I think that this is one of those pix that would look good with the background blurred, but i would have to have the lion in good focus. Could I do this with a smaller f-stop?

I'd likely lighten this, too. I have to lighten nearly all of my photos.

Yellow Trucks

When the dealer caught me photographing these, he asked me why i was taking pix of his trucks.

"Because they are cool!" I answered.

He replied, "Then BUY one!"

This was shot with Nikon D70, Exposure Program "not defined," F-stop f/11.0, exp time 10/5000.

This needs to be lightened and cropped, i suspect.

Swings

I just thought this was too quaint to pass up. :)

Shot with my old Nikon Coolpix 5000. Normal program, F-stop f/4.3, ISO Speed ratings 100, exp time 10/1187.

Other than lightening the photo, and maybe cropping a bit from the bottom, i don't know what else i could do to this.

Caterpillar

Shot with my ol' Nikon Coolpix 950. Normal Program, f/3.3, 80 ISO, exp time 10/420.

Cropping and sharpening both benefit this photo, imho. Otherwise, I consider myself lucky to have captured this moment!
